June 3, 2023 Spent a few hours kayaking the marsh area at Fair Haven Beach State Park, in the town of Fair Haven, New York.

Started off in Sterling Pond, paddling into the passage way that runs along the north side of the marsh area. Initially the marsh was thick with vegetation, but still passable by kayak.

After around 75 yards, the passage way opened up, and became a very peaceful paddle.

This turtle and frog pretend to dislike each other, but I heard from a heron that they are actually best friends.

I’ve been telling my kids for years that I think muskrats are jerks when it comes to having their picture taken. Many times I have seen a muskrat, only to have it dive under the water as soon as I got my camera out. Well…..I finally encountered a muskrat that made me take back all that I’ve said. This guy was very cooperative.

Also cooperating for a picture was this great blue heron.

….and, this week on “Lodge Hunters”, Bucky and Becky are looking for a studio lodge in the Fair Haven district, with an eye toward expanding their family. Their budget is the bark from 15 birch trees. Our experts have helped narrow their search to three lodges that meet their criteria.

Goslings and cygnets (had to Google what baby swans are called).

In the end, it was just over 3 miles, and took me almost 2 hours – although, I stopped a lot along the way to take pictures.

Also, once you hit the Sterling Creek, you are coming back with the current. I paddled, but it could also be a nice drift back to the pond.
