Spent a couple of hours kayaking into the Honeoye Inlet on June 30, 2024. We launched our kayaks at the New York State Marine Park, at the south end of Honeyoe Lake, on East Lake Rd. There is a gravel beach to the side of the boat launch slips that made for an easy kayak launch. It is also free to park at the launch site, as long as you use one of the car parking spots, and don’t take up a trailer spot.

It took a minute to find the right place to enter the inlet from the lake, however the trip was very easy and peaceful after that.

I was hoping we might see some river otter, which were re-introduced to the area a little over 20 years ago. You can read more about that here: The return of the river otter. Unfortunately, we did not see any otter, beaver, or musk rat. I can say that I heard a lot of animial movement along the bank of the inlet as we paddled through – and the sounds made me think these were fair sized animals. We also spotted several “slides” into the water, presumably made by otter or beaver. However, the vegetation is thick along the bank, and we could not see any of the animals making the roucus.

We did see a lot of birds – including osprey, great blue heron, and green heron. However, they were mostly gone before I could take a picture. Only exception was this cedar waxwing, who sat still long enough for a quick picture.

About a mile into the inlet, we encountered a beaver damn – which we could have passed over. However, the wind was picking up and we decided that was a good point to turn around. All told, the trip was 2.6 miles, and took us just over 2 hours.
