Spent a half-day hiking up Beacon Mountain, after a great weekend trip to Newburgh, New York. It is a somewhat steep hike. Near the top, I was feeling good about myself for making it up – when some cadets from nearby West Point literally ran past us while carrying full packs.

At the top, you can see the ruins of what was once  the Mount Beacon Casino and Beaconcrest Hotel.

Opening in 1902, the Mount Beacon Incline Railway brought passengers and luggage to the top of the mountain.

There is a lot more information on the casino and railway here: Ruins of the Mount Beacon Incline Railway

Aside from the casino and railway remains are some pretty cool views of the Hudson River, Newburgh, and beacon

Beacon Mountain has a lot of history – going back to the American Revolution, when signal fires were used to alert the Continental Army of British troop movement.

Bannerman’s Island is also visible from the top of the mountain

We took a boat to Bannerman’s Island (technically Pollepel Island) the day before – which I also recommend.

  1. Thank you for sharing. My father, his brothers and their families, and my grandfather lived in the Beacon area for a number of years. Some of my cousins still do. I’m sure they will enjoy these pictures too.
